nPro vs Microsoft Purview DLP
Purview is the natural DLP choice if your data lives in Microsoft 365 and you already pay for E5. nPro DLP is for organisations that need inspection to happen on their own servers, or that do not want DLP tied to a Microsoft licence tier.
The short answer
- Where inspection happens. nPro DLP is self-hosted: every check runs on a server inside your network and the findings stay in your own database. Purview is a Microsoft cloud service, and there is no version of it you can run on your own servers.
- What it costs. nPro Pro is USD 4.50 per agent per month and includes DLP, XDR, SIEM and network monitoring. Purview Suite is USD 12 per user per month on top of Microsoft 365 E3, or comes with E5 at USD 60 per user per month.
- Where Purview wins. Native coverage of Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams, label-based protection, Copilot data controls and a long track record. nPro DLP launched in September 2026 and does not block email inline yet.

Where your data goes to be checked
Data loss prevention reads your most sensitive content by design. That makes the question of where the reading happens more important for DLP than for almost any other security control.
Purview is part of Microsoft's cloud. Devices are onboarded to the Purview service, policy evaluation happens centrally, and activity and alerts are reviewed in Microsoft's portals. For many organisations that is perfectly acceptable, particularly if the data already lives in Microsoft 365.
nPro DLP takes the other route. The engine runs on a server inside your network, the agents report to that server, and the findings stay in your own database. Nothing is sent to NPRO TECH or any other third party in order to be inspected. Residency becomes a property of the architecture rather than a clause in a contract.
That difference matters most under data protection laws that care where personal data is processed, such as Malaysia's amended PDPA, Indonesia's PDP Law and Vietnam's PDPL, and in networks that cannot reach the internet at all. Why cloud DLP is a residency problem →
What it costs: a worked example
Take an organisation of 100 staff, each with one laptop, already on Microsoft 365 E3 and looking to add endpoint DLP.
nPro Pro
USD 450/month
100 agents × USD 4.50. Includes DLP, XDR, SIEM and network monitoring. Plus the server you run it on.
Purview Suite on E3
USD 1,200/month
100 users × USD 12, billed annually. Also covers insider risk, eDiscovery and records management.
Upgrade E3 to E5
USD 2,100/month
100 users × the USD 21 difference between E3 (USD 39) and E5 (USD 60). Brings Defender and much more with it.
Reading the numbers fairly
nPro licenses per agent, meaning per protected machine. Microsoft licenses per user. If your staff use two devices each, nPro's figure doubles while Purview's does not.
And if you already own E5, Purview DLP is effectively paid for. In that case the question is not price but whether you are comfortable with where the inspection happens, and whether you need coverage Purview does not give you, such as Linux endpoints.
Where Purview is the stronger choice
No DLP product wins on every axis. These are the situations where Purview is the better answer today.
Your sensitive data lives in Microsoft 365
Purview covers Exchange, SharePoint, OneDrive and Teams natively, with no connectors to build. nPro DLP protects endpoints and does not inspect content inside Microsoft 365.
You need to block email now
nPro flags outbound email through your mail platform's audit feed but does not block it inline yet. Purview blocks in Exchange Online today.
You classify with sensitivity labels or govern Copilot
Purview policies follow the label, so protection stays attached to the file, and Purview Suite includes controls for Microsoft 365 Copilot data. nPro does not use sensitivity labels, and its AI controls cover AI tools in general rather than integrating with Copilot specifically.
You need a long track record
nPro DLP launched in September 2026. If your procurement process requires years of production references, Purview has them and nPro does not yet. Start nPro in monitor mode and pilot it before relying on enforcement.
What self-hosting asks of you
nPro has no SaaS option. You need a Linux server that somebody patches, monitors and backs up. If your organisation has no appetite for running infrastructure, a cloud service such as Purview is the better fit whatever its price.
In exchange, DLP ships switched off and moves through monitor to enforce one group at a time, so nothing is blocked until you decide. Egress events land on the same timeline as nPro XDR and SIEM detections, agents keep their last policy when a laptop leaves the network, and the whole platform can run air-gapped.
nPro is the right Purview alternative if...
The content you protect must not leave your own infrastructure to be inspected.
You are on Microsoft 365 E3 or Business plans and cannot justify E5 or Purview Suite for every user.
You need to protect Linux endpoints as well as Windows and macOS.
You handle Southeast Asian national ID numbers, from Malaysian NRIC and Indonesian KTP to Thai, Singaporean, Vietnamese and Philippine IDs, and want detectors built for them.
You want DLP, XDR and SIEM under one agent and one per-agent price.
Part of your network is air-gapped or cannot reach a vendor cloud.
You do not have to choose one. Many organisations keep Purview for Microsoft 365 content and run nPro on the endpoints where residency matters most.
